A Hot Tub Conversation
Bill read a letter from Randall in the meeting today. It said that Shore loves the idea of partnering with SPCF to plant more churches, but there are some concerns about doing it right away with our team. He said that it was the view of the Shore eldership that they are not in a position to substantially partner with any team right now...perhaps in a few years. He also said that our team needs to gain some practical NZ ministry experience before launching (which we would all agree with and have said all along).
However, he also said that Shore is prepared to assist our entire team to work alongside Shore's ministry team "with a view to strengthening the health of Shore, not creating an autonomous group/church that would then become a daughter church plant. The role of the team while at Shore would be to invest in Shore itself, while at the same time preparing themselves for their own future plant. Provided that this team is open to gaining ministry experience within NZ, the leadership of Shore will explore a more formal partnership in the future."
He said they can't say when they will be ready to help plant a daughter church, but the time isn't now and that they would re-evaluate this option in 2 years. Randall wants to help us succeed in church planting...I really believe that. He and the Shore eldership recommended that Hamish "take the initiative in finding NZ ministry experience before he assumes the full leadership role of this church plant."
If by that Randall was saying that Hamish should find another NZ church in which to gain NZ ministry experience, some of the SPCF board members (and Joe and I) would be in disagreement with that idea. Jeff Metzger said the wrong experience is sometimes worse than no experience. He then went on to tell about how Bill Hybels started Willow Creek at the age of 19 with no ministry experience while in Bible college.
Joe and I were talking in the hot tub at the hotel tonight. We both feel like our plans don't have to change, but that we do need to get some clarification from SPCF and Shore as to roles and expectations. I'm sure there is a lot of experience to gain working alongside Shore with The Well or whatever we are involved in. In the meeting today, there was a lot of positive talk about our team being an asset to Shore for a year or two (it sounds like they need help), raising up leaders to help them grow, working diligently (for the Lord, and not for men - Col.3), gaining nz ministry experience, and possibly helping shore get to the point where they CAN give us support like a core group or financial support. Randall mentioned in the letter that they would re-evaluate this stance after two years of our involvement there. If they still can't commit to a daughter plant with us after that, we could move on to starting a wholly separate church if God leads us that way. I believe two years adjusting to NZ culture and helping Shore would be a good amount of experience in the country for me before tackling a plant with or without Shore's involvement.
I'm not surprised. I think Shore is trying to protect us as a team and them as a church. God is still in control. His timing will be perfect for us. We just need to keep listening and trusting. I think a partnership/internship/whatevership with Shore is a good thing for us to continue to pursue as a young team who needs experience and cultural adaptation. That part Shore says they can handle. It's the planting part that they aren't ready for. We should be careful, though, to outline expectations and roles for sure. I'm just glad we're getting somewhere in that area. It is a need that was very apparent to SPCF in the meeting today...and we didn't even get to the Felt Needs document yet! Any thoughts?

Can I say that I am so glad that you guys are there at the meeting going to bat for us? Can I also say that I am impressed with your discernment and positive outlook in this whole thing? I agree with you that this can and will be great timing with God. The internship will be as good and meaningful for both sides as we make it to be. We will gain a lot of experience, and that can't be bad.
One question: how do we think our supporters will feel about us spending two years in the adaption/experience phase of the plant? Also (sorry--two questions), does this effect how many years we are raising support for? If we spend 2 years on the ground with Shore, and then potentially have to start a church plant from scratch, we are looking at the possibility of 6-8 years before being able to be funded internally. Just a thought to throw into the mix.

Did I mention that I miss you guys and can't wait to see you all again in may? Your energy energizes me. This is going to be fun!!

I agree that a 2-year internship poses potential problems with supporters. Not so much in having to wait longer until we are self-sufficient, but having to wait so long until we are able to report results. I feel nervous about raising money to plant a church when I know that I will basically be serving in an existing church for at least 2 years. If we planted after that, it could be a total of 5 years before we actually had our own congregation. I don't know if most churches would be willing to support a church plant that won't be planting for 5 years...does that make sense?
Do you guys (Nate and Joe) get the impression that Shore is only willing to provide us with an internship if we are willing to commit 2 years to it? Or is the 2 year timeline only if we wish to take a core group from Shore?
9:13 AM
The 2 year timeline only marks the time when Shore will re-evaluate a potential full-partner church plant with us. Other than that I think Shore is willing to give us experience serving in ministry at Shore. The details, however, are up for discussion. Joe and I hope to define some of those details with the board and maybe draw up an official "offer" on our team's behalf from SPCF to Shore today. We'll see...it doesn't look good with the time we have left in the meeting.

Hamish, did you send the application for affiliation with SPCF yet? They did not receive the fax.

Here are some bullets I would suggest we offer to Shore:
-All members of our team would work as staff members under Reuben and the elders.
-SPCF will form a Management Team that consists of SPCF board members, Shore leaders, and possibly a key financial partner or two. Entire team to be about 7-9 individuals.
-The MT would hold bi-monthly meetings with all 3 couples via technology to be determined.
-Each team member would also be provided a coach with whom he/they would meet twice monthly via phone/webconference
-Each team member individual--all 6--would also develop a mentoring relationship with an appropriate person who would guide/pray in personal development
10:51 AM
Could we suggest to Shore that after one year of internship/staff service, we re-evaluate a timeline that might allow the planting team to begin functioning as a team for pre-launch work?
10:54 AM
I think the time frame for support is not really a problem. Although we think in terms of 4-5 years in the US, most churches will expect that it will take longer internationally.

New list of bullets I would suggest we offer to Shore:
-All members of our team would work as staff members under Reuben and the elders as interns/staff members at the pleasure and direction of the Shore leadership

This whole concept can really work! I'm excited about the potential impact of a new church to open in just a few short years--maybe less than 40 months from now! Thanks for letting me be a part.

Thanks for your help, Brent. Your gifts and experience in this area are going to be a HUGE asset to our team.
12:08 PM
Thanks for all your suggestions, Brent. It's great having your experience and the experience of the SPCF team helping us. I would love to discuss this proposal with you guys further. When were you thinking of sending it to Shore?
Also, we tried to send the application several times with no luck. Neither attempts to fax worked, nor did scanning and emailing. I ended up sending it via the mail. Since it isn't going to get to the US in time for the meeting, I just had it sent to Colorado. Sorry about all the hassles with that. Nothing seemed to work!! If there is anything you need me to rewrite for you for the meeting, just let me know.
3:25 AM
Thanks, Hamish. You might want to send an email to Bill Weber and Richard Crabtree to let them know it's in the mail. The meeting went very well. Brent came through for us big time. He was snowed-in in New York and was on conference call with us both days of the meeting. All blog comments from Brent took place during the meeting and I was dictating them back to the board as brent listened in. It was fun.
Brent put together a draft memo of understanding and we printed it out for all the board members. They intend to read it over, wait for the "official" letter from the Shore elders and send the memo or a revision of it in response. I was very pleased with how it all went. I'll get my hands on that memo and email it to you. Thanks!

I feel really good about the annual meeting. I am pleased that we are going to be taking "action steps" such as forming a management team and coaching relationships. Hamish, are you familiar with management teams, and if so, do you think Shore's leadership would be agreeable to that?
I feel like this is all really moving forward. I can't wait to see what God is going to do. I am just so excited to see God working in a city full of people who ignore Him. At the same time, I am trying to prepare myself for the hard work. It seemed that all of the SPCF missionaries in the South Pacific region of our world are having a difficult time sharing the gospel. I think our team has some unique and incredible gifts, though, and that we have a unique and incredible God who is able to do immeasurably more than all that we can ask or immagine, according to his power that is at work within us.
I look forward to when the funds are raised, the team is in NZ, and the Spirit is flowing like a river.
Amen.
